Our quest to visit the oldest bar in every state began with Ohio. Opportunity knocked when Bruce was invited to a conference in Dayton Ohio. The first thing we checked was our map. Where was the oldest bar in Ohio? Turns out it is in Yellow Springs which was only about 20 minutes from Bruce’s conference. I had just started a new job, so I couldn’t take any time off, but we just had to make it work. So we flew into Ohio together on a cold November Saturday morning and I flew out Sunday morning leaving Bruce in Ohio to freeze and stay for his conference.
Ohio is not my idea of a good time, especially in November, so I was happily surprised to find a quaint and artsy town filled with artisan craft type stores. It was cold, but pleasant enough to walk around and explore for a little while at least. We were told by the car rental agent that Dave Chappel lives here and often strolls around town. We didn’t run into Dave, but the store owners all confirmed that in warmer weather you’d be likely to see him sitting on the bench sipping coffee.
You would have thought we made it to the Eiffel Tower based on our level of excitement to arrive at Ye Olde Trail Tavern! I guess it was the idea of starting an adventure and recognizing the building from pictures that made it so exciting. The antique décor with wood plank walls, pewter antiques and wrought iron chandeliers gave us the gratifying historic feel we were hoping to find. The best part was how aloof the patrons and bartenders were about their local watering hole’s 166 year history. To them, it’s just their local bar, which made our excitement probably seem ridiculous to them. We didn’t care though, the beer was good and the fried cheese balls were awesome. Our bartender was even sweet enough to pose for a picture with us.
